Green Glazed Vase by Arequipa Pottery

Stoneware vase by Arequipa Pottery, made in Fairfax, California in 1912. The low, rounded form features an undulating rim and a matte green glaze with natural variation. Marked on the base with the Arequipa name, date, and shape number 37.
Arequipa Pottery was founded as part of a women’s tuberculosis sanatorium in Fairfax, California, where patients made ceramics as therapeutic work. The workshop operated from 1907 to 1918 and produced limited quantities. Similar examples are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum, and the Oakland Museum of California.
